High Rise
Breeze block, water, wheelbarrow 1500 x 800 x 500mm approx 2009
A breeze block stands in a wheelbarrow partly filled with water, an ascending watermark creeping through the block. Placed underneath a leak in the roof, the intermittent entering of rainwater sustains the supply.
Used in construction, a breeze block, which is formed from cinders, is efficient when protected by an outer layer of cladding or traditional bricks. The climbing water level highlights the vulnerability of this material when isolated. The rate of its progress is unpredictable; the water level rises and falls during the exhibition depending on the atmosphere in the gallery.
